This is my last class before I begin working on my MBA. It was also important to me to finish my BS in the same year as my son. He will walk across the stage on May 20th. I took th eliberty to update all of my blogs based on your comments and feedback.

Your class has been insightful. My attention to detail really kicks in whenever I look at artwork. I am also compelled to pay close to the period in which the work was completed.

I wish everybody the best of luck with their future endeavors. I enjoyed reviewing your documents on the museum's that you visited. I hope you had a positive experience in taking this non-traditional class.... From what you have written and photographed, I'd say it was a success...!

I need to get the grades in ASAP next week with the 15th (Tues) being the latest according to the registrar... She needs to get the grades for the graduating seniors especially. I am continuing to read everyone's papers and posts as well as post comments. Tuesday then is the final deadline for getting all of your work done.

This was the first time I asked students to create a blog to post their work to... It has paid off in many ways... Your photographs look so much better on your blog than pasted into a word document. I believe that your writing is better and more vital as you are writing for a larger audience than just me, the instructor. You are publishing out to the Web and I think you are proud of the results. There were a few kinks with the way blogger worked as Google recently bought them and in the transition there are still a couple of bugs... nothing too terrible though.

I will continue with this format for the time being. The Metropolitian Museum

Hello All,

I was finally able to get to the Met in NYC. It was pure chaos in NYC.. I LOVE IT! There was some sort of parade going on out there so there were many, many people in and out of the museum. This week are my Picture postings and Since I had two to complete I also went to the Guggenheim Museum to do something different. With my Luck, my camera went dead on me becasue I was taking pictures of all the madness in NYC and since I didn't bring the charger I was unable to take pictures which was a huge dissapointment. This now means I have one more museum to go to. During my visit to the Met I decided to focus on the Art Sculptures which I now have a special appreciation and personal interest for. come check out my pictures and don't forget to leave me a comment.

Yiovannie

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://museumexperience.blogspot.com/2007/05/i-love-new-york-metropolitian-museum.html' title='I LOVE NEW YORK! In my original Blog I wrote that i was handed some papers by the front desk that was a cheat sheet to the art peices dedicated to 9/11. My freind who I went to the museum with who was also working on an Art project recently had an opportunity to read my blog informed me that those were papers she had printed of the internet prior to our trip sine she had done some research on the museum and were not handed to me from the front desk. I felt a little silly about it, because I was handed some papers but those wern't it, I must've just gotten them confused. anyway I have revised my blog so please come check it out and leave me a comment.

Yiovannie

Revision

I have revised my blog for my visit to Yale Center for British Art. I went to visit one of my clients, Technicon Engineering in Macon, GA and saw a huge bill board on 16 for the Tubman African American Museum. At first glance I ignored it, but when I got off the highway there was another sign for the museum. My seond instinct was to take a minute and see what they had on exhibit. I was pleasantly surprised by the history and the culture that the museum has to offer. They are currently in the process of building a 49,000 square foot museum so that they can display more exhibits at one time and hold their after school workshops and art classes on the premises. Unfortunately, I only had a note pad and pencil to write down what I saw, but I encourage you to visit their website to check out their new building and some of the exhibits. at http://www.tubmanmuseum.com/newbuilding/

Please stop by and read my review of the museum at katonyahughey.blogspot.com

Yale University Museum of Art

ACK!!!!!!!!! I was in Hartford for a conference and tried to kill two birds with one stone.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

This past Saturday I ventured to NYC and visited the Met. Lately I've run into a string of bad luck that I'm hoping to beat this week. My visit to the Wadsworth last weekend was a disaster, after getting the day off from work, I headed up there only to find out that I wouldn't be able to use my camera (a palm pilot digital) to take any pictures in the museum. I was still able to walk around and enjoy my visit, but I couldn't document it as well as I liked.

To make matters even worse, last Wednesday I was all set to head off to New York and the MET, only to get to the train station and find out all trains were delayed indefinitely due to wires down on the track! Hopefully I'll have some better luck this week!

Hope everything is going well for you all!

The Metropolotan Museum of Art

http://lisadavisamc.blogspot.com/

Blog

Hi everyone! There was so many people today. I could not believe it. All kinds of people, speaking many different languages. Vendor, ice-cream trucks, nut makers my eyes were all over the place. The outside , which you can see, it is the first picture shown, is beautiful and very large. Todays events include family programs, guided tours and member events. All of this, and I am still in the libby!! When we entered I was in Amazement, it is HUGE. I was pressed for time, so had to plan my visit around the museum. I spent most of my time 3.5 hours on the first floor and the mezzanine floor. The elevator has a person who brings you up and down, it was cool. The upper level was my favorite, it looks over the main floor. All those people walking, talking and learning, some people were sitting at table and some were drawing. This was a great way to start of my spring

When inside, the place is really big with all kinds of interesting features, high ceilings and beautiful floors. This museum is a special place. I pay and now I am inside the museum, and I do not know were to begin. There is so much to see.

I begin my journey on the first floor were a huge collection of Greek and Roman Art is displayed. I seem to relate a little better to this type of art because, even if you have never been to a museum in your life, you have seen something Greek. Even if it is just a pillar on a building you recognize the influence. The Greek Sculpture Court is impressive. I noticed other student having discussions, in detail pertaining to these fabulous sculpture. I was drown into their discussion because, I felt the same way but did not have anyone to tell. It is so funny how people can be given the same information but come to different conclusion.

The most interesting thing that I saw was in the "Etruscan Art." This part was beautiful! Located on the "M" level the mezzanine. There are glass box cubes, holding art work and information about the piece. There was a big glass box with a wonderful Chariot inside. A scene from the life of Achilles, of course Achilles is a Greek Hero (Trojan War). Also included was a bowl and a helmut of Achilles that was given to him by his mother. The Chariot is in such good condition, it is unbelievable. It is not large but, not small either. It is bronze in color with green and purture mixed in. Also Ivory is inlaid on certain parts, it is very beautiful. The Chariot was found near Monteleone di Spoleto in 1902, believed to be Etruscan second quarter of the 10th century B.C. A land owner working on his property made a great discovery.

There is so much to see. I was not able to see it all in the time I was their, but I will be going back to see the rest. This is now my favorite Museum surpassing the Atheneum, leaving them in the dust.

The Yale Art Gallery

My first visit was to The Yale Art Gallery. Without pictures it is hard for me to explain to impact this place had on me. I have been past this gallery lots of times and had never gone inside, it was great. My whole family accompanied me. The Yale Art Gallery was founded in 1832, is one of the oldest college art museums in the world. The permanent collection showcases artwork from twentieth century African, Chinese paintings from the Tang dynasty, modernist sculpture, American paintings and decorative arts and many more. The most interesting thing I saw was a mask, yes a mask. This was no ordinary mask, it was beautiful. It was very large (80 pounds) and had an exaggerated head and breasts. I took this to mean Strength in Nurture of a Woman. This particular mask was said to represent a beautiful mother, used during weddings, funerals or any major events. The funny thing about the ceremonies is that men wear these masks because they are so heavy. The masks are by Charles B. Benenson, B.A. 1933, Mouya Congo (Kinshasa) late 19th early 20th century.

The Wadaworth Atheneum

The Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Ct. was a great day. This place was emaculate inside. The people were nice, friendly and helpful. The lady at the front desk said to me "are you a student", I love that, she was sharply dressed and pleasant. The museum was organized and clean. On this day I visited a symphony was playing, it was very relaxing. The music was beautiful along with the art. After browsing around, I was drawn back to two particular piece of art. The first piece was called "Baggage" and second called "Peasant Girl."

"Baggage" and the other was a painting "Peasant Girl."
My favorite was "Baggage" by, Emma Amosshe was born in Atlanta Ga. in 1938. Baggage 1193, is a part of an autobiographical series begun in the late 1980's. In these works, Emma Amos uses vintage photo-graphics of the rural south and her family history. Exploring issues of identity, sexism and systematic racial attitudes. She believes that "these issues have marginalized her and other African American artist from the Mainstream art world." When I looked at this art work many things came to mind. Nature, destruction, tragedy, hate, and hope. There are so many feelings you could go though when viewing this piece. I had many thoughts when viewing this and felt like discussing it further even after I left. I was lucky to have had the opportunity to see it in person.

My second favorite was a great painting named "Peasant Girl, Haiti 1954. This oil canvas painting by Lois Mailou Jones was beautiful and had such great colors. Jones was born in Boston, Ma. 1905-1998, I thought this piece deserved and "honorable mention."

Yale University Art Gallery

Good Evening everyone,

I hope every enjoyed your weekend. Upstairs you won't be able to miss the Graydon Parrish masterwork of new classicism, TThe Cycle of Terror and Tradegedy: September 11, 2001-2006. This 8' X 18' foot painting was commissioned by the museum and was painted in response to the 911 trade towers event. Just as modernists threw out classical traditions at the start of the 20th century, this new work represents a similar process, a throwing out of modernist tenants for a return to using the figure in an allegorical and symbolic way.

Beth has done a great job in describing the piece and her reaction to it in her blog.... Carlos museum in all its SPLENDOR

This was my best museum visit to date. Everything was beautiful. From th emoment I was able to view the structure to the exhibits inside. The High museum is very modern, but plain. It has very high ceilings as it is four stories high. The wadsworth is very old, but classy. The exhibits were not as valuable, but it was a memorable experience. The Michael C. Carlos museum is a totally different experience. I really feel like I learned alot about the art world.

Michael C. Carlos Museum of Emory University is a beautiful museum. The architecture itself is very pleasing to the eye. The building that is it housed in was designed by the world renowned artist Michael Graves. Not knowing who Michael Graves was I had to do a little research. Michael Graves is a famous American architect that has designed beautiful structures throughout the United States. In addition he has a household product line that is sold out of Target. The Michael C. Carlos is listed as one of his famous structures. Michael C. Carlos is an Atlanta philanthropist. He donated an estimated twenty million dollars to the museum that bears his name.

When you look at the structure you can see the connection that it has throughout history. The exterior has a strong African motif. If you stand in front of the museum you can see pyramid shapes on each side. When walking through entrance you are again reminded Asia. They have the flair of a Bali House or a pavilion in Asia. Everything is asymmetric. The stone is different shades of tan. There are perfectly square windows on the lower level and rectangular windows on the upper level. I guess that is enough about the exterior I will move on to the exhibit.

The Michael C. Carlos museum offers collections in ancient Egyptian and Nubian art, Ancient near art, Art of ancient Americas, Asian art, Greek and Roman art, Sub-Saharan African and works of art on paper. Additionally, they have special art exhibits, lectures and receptions throughout the year. Upon entering the building you have the option of utilizing an MP3 player to listen to experts talk about the exhibitions.

There was so much to choose from, I decided to start my journey in the art of ancient Americas. I was captivated by the wood work. It wasn’t what I expected. My first stop was the Rosales Zoned graved female effigy. Period IV, 300 B.C-A.D. The effigy is ceramic, but you have to look really close. At first glance, I thought it was made of wood. The statue is brown and black, it is very hard to tell that it is a female. The statue is on her knees. The face is stern. The facial features are very harsh. The nose and mouth are large is size. In all honesty the only way to tell that this is a female is the fact they she has breasts and a necklace painted around her neck. This artwork is known as the Guanacaste-Nicoya style. The documentation indicates that some of the black spots used to be red, but changed due to oxygenation.

The next statue is the Paccha en Quecha. This is an odd looking clay statue that was used to assist with farming and potting plants. It has a long brown point with a hook attached near the middle. It looks as if they are held together by some type of foil. On top of the hook is a small object that looks like flower pot. The flower pot is tan with a design going up the side and around the neck where the opening is. The pattern is multi colored. Attached to the pot is an ear of corn. In all honesty I had to read the documentation to determine exactly what that piece was. This hook was used to during the corn season.

A little ways down the hall I spotted a pair of Earspools as known as earrings. They are absolutely beautiful and don’t look as if they belong with the other items in the collection. They are very large in size and possible very heavy. The design in the earrings is very detailed. The earrings are gold. The background is water, a boat with sails. There are two birds at the very top. They are facing each other with there beaks facing downward. You can make out the people in the water. There are clearly diving for something of importance. There are shells that are lying around the bottom, they resemble flowers. There a little bumps that outline the earrings. This is clearly an important event. The earrings that signify the importance are just phenomenal. These earrings are priceless. I am certain of that.

I didn’t plan on looking at the Ancient Egyptian Art, but a couple was discussing a coffin being part of the exhibit. Based on the conversation, I couldn’t resist. Honestly, I was a little nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. I cannot put the Coffin of Lady Tahat into words that will do it justice. The Coffin actually resembles a lady. The details are right in line with what you hear about Africans. She has a narrow face with wide eyes. She has a lot of hair. There are designs that resemble kente cloth in her hair. The top design reminds you of a crown. It has a star in the middle with more of the kente cloth design going around her head. She has on earrings that are too big for her narrow face. The earrings have the same design as that on top of her head. Her neck is long and thin and her hair hangs perfectly around it. Her body has distinct symbols and figures throughout. It appears that she has an important symbol in the middle of her chest. The outline looks like a bird with his wings spread wide. Her arms are folded across the lower part of her stomach. It almost seems out of proportion. Her fingers are detailed as they lay flat. The Coffin is very big, but the woman was very petite based on her face and hands. This Coffin is a must see. Every inch of the coffin is pained with some type of design of scenery. Even though I know this coffin is hundreds of years in age it looks like it was recently built.

It is hard to describe without pictures. This is a great family outing, if you are ever in the Atlanta area.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://museumexperience.blogspot.com/2007/04/touring-michael-c-carlos-museum-in-all.html' title='Touring the Michael C. In the usual "strict" method of teaching and grading, deadlines are sacrosanct, penalties are assessed for late work, work wont be accepted after a certain date, etc. In my 30 years of full time teaching, I have never worked this way and I have to tell you that I really don't want to undergo a massive personality change at this point.

In my student centered view of your progress, I try to keep focussed on "The Big Picture". Do you care about your museum visits, do you convey your enthusiasm in your blog? Did you connect personally with the work discussed? As Randy Jackson on Idol might put it, "are you keeping it real"? Are you fairly consistent in getting out for your visits? Is your post to your blog in your own voice and from your heart? Do you visit other students blogs and leave comments? Do you post to the class blog at least once each week?

In your writing do you quote or italicize text pasted in from another source and properly cite it? Have you taken a paragraph to discuss what movement or style the art work can be placed in? Have you included biographical information on the artist? Have you taken time to describe some details of what your saw as you looked at your chosen work carefully?

Have I been positive in the comments I leave on each of the posts to your own blog? If so, no changes need to be made... Have I suggested any changes in your post? Have you acted to rework suggestions?

If you can honestly answer yes to the above questions, you will do fine in the class... that is at least a B grade....

This is shaping up to be a fine week-end weather wise... Take your loved one(s) with you and have a great visit....!

Wadsworth Pictures

Please visit my blog of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum

katonyahughey.blogspot.com

I'm Back

Hello all,

Sorry I've been MIA for the past week or so, but a wicked virus swept through my entire house including the baby. I went to NYC with my niece Friday and have a TON of photos! We went early in the morning, spent much of the day at the Met, but also went to Madame Toussaud's before coming home. I think I walked a few miles and I would estimate that between train/subway stations and The Met (and Madame Toussaud's), I probably climbed about 3,000 stairs! My legs are KILLING me today! I'll post tomorrow and will let you know when it's up! :)
Beth

Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford

Hi all,

I just visited the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford. I went to the New Britain Museum of American Art last Thursday. I posted my photos Saturday, along with my blog, but had some formatting issues. I thought they were resolved Monday/Tuesday and I have not been back on. I just came on to tell you that I am going to NYC tomorrow to the MET and I didn't even see my Blog for last week! I must have made an edit and neglected to "re-publish!" I am sorry! I usually post a ton of photos and have had major issues with pictures aligning with text, etc. My next post will be much more simple! I'll still have a lot of photos, but I am going to put the text below and not worry about it being on the side of the photos, as it has caused me many late nights! Soo...I'll send another post this weekend, but check out the NBMAA....http://bethsmuseumexperience.blogspot.com/

Martin Luther King Historical Site Experience

Hello all,

Please come join me on my Museum experience. 1933, Mouya Congo (Kinshasa) late 19th early 20th century.

lisa davis calendar

First I would like to say hello to all. When I took this class I didn’t take into consideration that I would need to know more than just how to open a new word documentation to type my papers. I have learned so much in these two weeks of this class, Thanks to Professor Nevins. I don’t have pictures this week, although I did take some at the museum. When it came time to get them off the camera, oh boy. I had all my neighbors over trying to help me figure it out. Finally I returned to the store where I purchased it from, and they were floored also. They had to keep the camera. I haven’t heard from them as of yet, but as soon as I do, if need be I will post them at a later date and some new ones for my next post.

Please view my calendar:
Thursday April 5th Yale Art Gallery
Wednesday April 11th The Atheneum in Hartford
Monday April 23rd The Metropolitan Museum
Weeks 4-7 are undecided

Metropolitan Museum

Good evening

I hope everyone had a Happy Easter. I had the pleasure of going to New York this weekend to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Wow what a museum. My boyfriend and I enjoyed ourselves so such that we are thing of going again this summer.

The size of the museum was over whelming, but they had plenty of guards around to ask questions. They were very friendly and helpful. Now you can take pictures but you can use your flash. I have posted my paper with some pictures on my blog.

Now I am also going to post pictures on Fotothing.com (http://www.fotothing.com/) sometime this week. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and they are there. Remember to visit each others pages and leave comments... We are here to learn from each other and to support one another!

IMPORTANT! Remember to refresh your web browser each time you come back to this blog! In order to save download time, most browsers use a "cache" of the page which is dated information... Because several changes happen each day, You'll want to refresh your browser to see what's new.

When you post a new paper or images to your blog, invite others to come by your site to check it out with a post here. Remember your address to your blog does not have an "@" symbol, just periods, as in http://yiovannies-art-appreciation.blogspot.com/. Highlight the address and click the link button in the post editor (looks like the link of a chain) this will create a hot link and will get the viewer over to your blog with one click as in http://yiovannies-art-appreciation.blogspot.com/

You can also highlight any text and make it a link as in Take a look at my new post here! Same process... highlight the text and paste the link into the link box after you click on the link button in the post editor.

Keep up the good work, everyone.

Wadsworth Museum

Well change of plans i didnt go to the newbritain museum but i did go to the one in hartford it was a good experience. Next time I need to make sure the charger is plugged in all the way ;). Come check out my blog and I am looking forward to viewing yours.

http://yiovannies-art-appreciation.blogspot.com/

Have fun on your trips.

Yiovannie

Looking forward to the Met in NYC.

Yale University Art Gallery

Hi All,

Today (Saturday March 31) I visited the Yale University Art Gallery. I had a great experience viewing the large collection they offer. The admission is free and there are headset available at the help desk. The museum is user friendly and the staff is helpful. I chose a piece painted by Edwin Austin Abbey called Richard, Duke of Gloucester, and the Lady Anne. It was painted in 1896 and featured a scene from Richard III. Go to my blog and check out my paper, I have some cool pictures there (including one of my projects). I am extremely excited about my next adventure.

Happy Hunting

Jason

Yale Center for British Art April events

Hi Everyone,

I just received the april newsletter from YCBA.... enjoy!

YCBA APRIL E-NEWS
1080 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT 06517
Tues-Sat 10-5 | Sun 12-5 | FREE ADMISSION
203 432 2800 | ycba.info@yale.edu

Exhibitions

Howard Hodgkin: Paintings 1992–2007
Closing April 1

The documentary film, Imagine… A Picture of the Painter Howard Hodgkin will be screened in the Lecture Hall at 12:30 pm on Sunday, April 1.
Added tours!
Exhibition tours of Howard Hodgkin: Paintings 1992-2007 will be held on Saturday, March 31 at 12 noon and 1 pm and Sunday April 1 at 2 pm and 3 pm.

Paul Mellon’s Legacy: A Passion for British Art
April 18–July 29, 2007
This spring the Yale Center for British Art celebrates its thirtieth anniversary and commemorates the centennial of the birth of its founder, Paul Mellon (1907–1999; Yale College 1929), with the special exhibition, Paul Mellon’s Legacy: A Passion for British Art.

Student Exhibition:
Joseph Wright and the Spectacle of Science
March 30–June 11, 2007
The first annual Art in Focus student guide exhibition, Joseph Wright and the Spectacle of Science focuses on a mezzotint after Joseph Wright of Derby’s A Philosopher Shewing an Experiment on the Air Pump. I got a great parking space right up front (bonus)! You check in at the front desk (make sure to tell them you are there for school and you only pay $5). They ask what school & professor. Then you have to go over to the guard by the door and read/sign a form to get your red photo pass, which you must wear while in the museum. You turn it into the guard on your way out.

I liked the museum for the most part, especially the Gengras Court in the center of the building. The huge paintings there are magnificent. I like the smaller ones on top too, and wish they were lower so I could get a good look.

Some things surprised me, like the little, tiny Picasso and the Andy Warhol's. They were better than I imagined. The Jackson Pollocks kind of made me feel like more of an artist. I am not blown away by his art like some...I think anyone can do that (?). I like to see real craftsmanship and creativity. I loved the sculptures - although the ones not in cases were exceptionally dusty.

There were a few guards roaming around, but they seemed nice. The only problem I encountered was wanting to photograph the piece I chose and sketch/take notes while other people wanted to look at it. You have to get in, get out, then get back in!

Oh yeah, one other thing about the Wadsworth Atheneum that kind of surprised me was the level of humidity. I thought it would be cooler and drier in there and it was hot/humid. I am from the Deep South, so I know hot/humid when i feel it. It was quite warm.

Anyway - I'll post probably tomorrow...so come look at my photos and read about my selection!
Beth

This week

Hi everyone,

this week I plan on visiting the Yale British Museum.
