Wadsworth Museum

Hello All,

It was such a beautiful day to take a trip to the museum and I must say that this experience was different from others. For some reason this time I was floored by all the art work as if it was my first time ever going to the Wadsworth. I had a great time and would have like to post other pictures aside from the one I chose to write about but the battery in the camera started running low. Next time I need to make sure the charger is plugged in all the way ;). Come check out my blog and I am looking forward to viewing yours.

Have fun on your trips.

Looking forward to the Met in NYC.

Yale University Art Gallery

Hi All,

Today (Saturday March 31) I visited the Yale University Art Gallery. I had a great experience viewing the large collection they offer. The admission is free and there are headset available at the help desk. The museum is user friendly and the staff is helpful. I chose a piece painted by Edwin Austin Abbey called Richard, Duke of Gloucester, and the Lady Anne. It was painted in 1896 and featured a scene from Richard III. Go to my blog and check out my paper, I have some cool pictures there (including one of my projects). I am extremely excited about my next adventure.

Happy Hunting

Free Bus to NYC!

I sent everyone an email today on Campus Cruiser email to let you know that there is a FREE bus to NYC leaving the campus center parking lot at Albertus at 8am sharp sponsored by the History Club. It will leave NY at 5 pm.... That coupled with a voluntary donation amount to get into the Met and you have one inexpensive getaway for the day!

If anyone is interested in going, call student services tomorrow to see about getting on the list... there is still plenty of room.

Change of Plans

Okay, so I didn't get to go to the New Britain Museum Saturday, but I went to the Wadsworth Atheneum today. I got a great parking space right up front (bonus)! You check in at the front desk (make sure to tell them you are there for school and you only pay $5). They ask what school & professor. Then you have to go over to the guard by the door and read/sign a form to get your red photo pass, which you must wear while in the museum. You turn it into the guard on your way out.

I liked the museum for the most part, especially the Gengras Court in the center of the building. The huge paintings there are magnificent. I like the smaller ones on top too, and wish they were lower so I could get a good look.

Some things surprised me, like the little, tiny Picasso and the Andy Warhol's. They were better than I imagined. The Jackson Pollocks kind of made me feel like more of an artist. I am not blown away by his art like some...I think anyone can do that (?). I like to see real craftsmanship and creativity. I loved the sculptures - although the ones not in cases were exceptionally dusty.

There were a few guards roaming around, but they seemed nice. The only problem I encountered was wanting to photograph the piece I chose and sketch/take notes while other people wanted to look at it. You have to get in, get out, then get back in!

Oh yeah, one other thing about the Wadsworth Atheneum that kind of surprised me was the level of humidity. I thought it would be cooler and drier in there and it was hot/humid. I am from the Deep South, so I know hot/humid when i feel it. It was quite warm.

Anyway - I'll post probably tomorrow...so come look at my photos and read about my selection!

Museum Etiqutte

Here are some things to keep in mind when visiting any art museum....

- When writng in a notebook or journal, never use a pen, always a pencil. Conservators can remove pencil should it get onto (heaven forbid) on an artwork. Leave your pens at home. A guard might even come up to you and tell you to put your pen away.

-Turn off your cell phone... Guards need something to do with their long days and relish yelling at patrons when they see someone talking on a phone.

-The general rule on photography in most museums is that it is permitted but absolutely no flash. The intense light of the flash is damaging to the artwork. It is always a good idea to check with a guard... they will usually say thanks for asking!

-Work that is borrowed from another museum for a special event is never allowed to be photographed. Check with the guard when in doubt... they will probably thank you. Most special exhibitions feature borrowed work and therefore can't be photographed. Often times there are postcards in the gift shop or images that you can find on the web to illustrate your writing if you choose a piece in a special exhibition.

-Of course, never touch anything directly. It's sometimes hard to resist touching a sculpture. The oils from your skin can be damaging. Try not to back into a piece either.

-A tripod for your camera is out... it can trip up other patrons. Remember, turn off your flash!

Museum Visit Itinerary

Hi Everyone - I have posted my museum visit itinerary to my blog: http://bethsmuseumexperience.blogspot.com/. I may have to switch museums depending on availability of childcare, length of time I have available to travel, weather, etc.. but I will fit them all in!

I'm hoping to go to NYC next week. Since I guess I am going alone, I will probably go during the week sometime.

I am really not looking forward to going into the city all alone, in fact I am dreading it. I would rather go alone to ten museums in CT than alone to 1 in NYC. I'm not afraid or anything, it's just the trip...I've only been into NYC twice before and I can't imagine having no one to talk with or walk with me - dang! I might be able to coerce my niece into going with me...

I tried to plan my visits around exhibits I want to see, but I am open to anything!

P.S. Jerry - I wish the Guggenheim was on the list!!! There are a couple things there I would love to cover, since I have to go to NYC anyway! I have been there twice and love it.

Class Calendar Posted!

Hi Everyone,

I just finished the class calendar and it is posted to my website... the link is on the list of important class links on the left column and also linked from the class syllabus.

After careful thought, I have made a decision that perhaps 6 papers is a bit heavy so I am asking you to write 4 papers and post 2 weeks of images with captions from your outing those weeks... I still want you to complete 6 separate visits but you may show us and tell us just a bit about what you saw through your pictures and captions posted to your blog.

Check the calendar for expectations and dates.

This is the ceiling of the Great Hall at the Met in NYC during one of our outings there.

Hello All

Good evening All,

My name is Richard McCoy. I am a fairly new student to Albertus Magnus College, with this class being my second course. I am a recent associates degree graduate of Western International University, a division of the University of Phoenix online. I am really looking forward to getting out to some museums because I really appreciate art and the people that create it. It has to be the greatest form of expression next to writing. I look forward to working with all of you this semester and visiting the various sites.

Week 1

Hello All,

My name is Charlotte. This is my second class with Jerry, I loved the digital photography class, I learned so many techniques to great picture taking; of which my 6-month old has reaped the benefits:-) (This pic was taken by my 9 year-old son, he's benefitting also) I think I will enjoy this class as well, it will be a chance for me to get my family out to a museum or two.
My blog is setup, the address is:

I look forward to a great class with everyone.

Week 1

Hey everyone! My name is Marc, and my blog can be found at http://marcmase.blogspot.com/

I've always loved going to museums, so I'm really looking forward to this class. I was at the Yale Art Gallery on Sunday, and can't believe what a difference the renovations made there. It's so much brighter now! I can't recommend it enough. Talk to you all soon! --Marc

HELLO

Hi All

My name is Charmaine Martin

I am really looking forward to this class.

Hello!

Hi Everyone,

This is also my second class with Jerry. I LOVED the digital photography class and highly recommend it. I still occassionally post to Fotothing!

I am really taking this class because I enjoyed the first so much that I hoped to squeeze in another before graduation! I've taken all my required classes, so this is an elective. I love going to museums and hate when people rush me through them. I love the excitement and electricity of a new, famous exhibit - but hate the crowds. I went to th Aztec exhibit at the Guggenheim 2 or 3 years ago and loved it. Unfortunately, I went with a friend who has a short attention span and I only got passing glances of some of the pieces. Shame, I know.

I'm hoping to really absorb the art this time. I know I'll love it...

My blog is http://bethsmuseumexperience.blogspot.com/.

Did anyone see my post at the bottom, between Jerry's posts? It's kind of sandwiched in there, but I was asking if anyone was interested in going as a group to the 2 NYC museums (or 1, whatever). Just leave a comment and we can make plans... I'm at the tail-end of the flu, so if we could wait another week to go, I would be fully recovered!
:)

What Do I Have To Do This Week?

Welcome all! This is the first week of class. We will use this as the set up week to get all systems operating. During this week you should:

- Read the syllabus, click through the links provided and understand what will be required of you in this class.

- Respond to the email from blogger and click on the link which will take you to a sign in page to join this blog, The Museum Experience. If you don't have a Gmail account, you will cick on the link there and take a minute to create an account. Use that log in to access this blog. Gmail is a Google company that has an amazing array of free services that could change your life... so don't be shy here.... Remember to write down your username (your new email address) and password. As of Sunday afternoon, 7 have signed in and 13 haven't responded yet.

-Create your own blog. This takes a few minutes... choose a template, click publish and you are ready to post to it. You may use the post editor as your word processor to actually write your paper. Please post images with your papers from your outing. Include shots of the museum, and the piece that you are writing about. Use close up shots to help illustrate points you are making in your paper. Papers should be 650 - 900 words long. You may find it easier to use Word to write... Use Tools>Word Count to count your words to check your progress. Take a look at Museum Experience student Tad Gembala's blog to see what I am expecting:

http://silvertone22.blogspot.com/

-Review the class calendar. There are 6 trips out to museums, three assigned and 3 of your choice on the list in the syllabus. Create your first post to your blog with an outline of the trips you will be taking, with dates. Put them on your calendar, invite friends and family and most of all, have fun with this. This is essentially a travel course... you need to travel to do it. Here is a link to the calendar

-Line up a digital camera and learn how to use it. Learn how to get your images onto your computer, edit them and upload them to the blog. This is easy to do with free Picasa software from Google. http://picasa.google.com/ Learn how to turn off the flash on your camera as flash is never allowed inside the museums.

-Class will run from Monday morning at 9 am until Monday at 9 am. I will grade each week's work Monday morning before 11 am. Because unexpected things can happen, there will be a make-up week during the final week of class where you will have the opportunity to make up the grade for 1 week that you missed. Post comments on each others posts and post to this blog each week. Use this blog to tell everyone what you are doing and to invite others to visit your blog as well. At least 1 letter grade will reflect your posting and helpfulness to others in this online community. If you don't contribute, the highest grade you can earn for the week will be a "B".

-Post your blog address and your screen name that you use here in the "comment" link to this post.

-Take a look at the two sample student papers linked from the links section on the upper left of this blog.

-Review the video I created on how to post to this blog. (Link on upper left also.)

-All of this will be completed by Monday morning, March 26. If you wish, you can get a head start on your visits and writing and begin your first project this week too.

-My office hours at Albertus are M/W, 3:50 - 4:50 and Tu/Thu 11:10 - 12:05... Please come visit any time for help with any of this, or just to say hi!

-Email me if you would like me to call you to help walk you through any of this...

A business major who took this class a couple of years ago remarked, "I never knew that you could take a day and plan an outing to a museum with your family and have a great time! This has been a great experience!" This sums up my hopes and dreams for you in taking this class.

p.s. I just had Word do a word count on this post and it has 750 words...

NYC Museums

Hi Everyone! I am looking forward to this class...but not looking forward to taking a solo trip to NYC. If anyone wants to go as a group, send me a note or better yet, respond to this post so everyone can see if there is interest.

If you are interested, make a suggestion of a day. I am not working right now, so I can go pretty much any day (with a couple of exceptions for dr/dentist), but I understand most of you may need to go on the weekend rather than take time off of work.

Also, would you be interested in going to both the Met and MoMA while we're there and make a day of it? I'm sure we could take the early train, spend several hours at each and catch an afternoon train home.

Let me know...
Beth

Welcome to Class!

Sketching and keeping a journal, Greek collection, first floor, south side, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Photographed by me during the Museum Experience class last academic year.

Hello everyone! and welcome to the class blog for the Mod 4 class, AH251, The Museum Experience. Here we will post images and comments each week about your adventures on the road as you travel around in your search for the sublime! I will be emailing everyone instructions on how to post on the first day of class.

To get the most out of your online class this Mod, it is important to communicate regularly with other members of the class and with me in this forum..... in fact, it is part of your grade. Post often and post early, to paraphrase a famous statement. I'm looking forward to this experience with you. It is my sincere hope that this class will be a worthwile and enjoyable experience for you.

I'd like you to create your own blog as well as join this blog. There you will post your papers and photos on a weekly basis. Be sure to post here as this is where we build the class community. Remember to put a link to your blog along with your post here.
